Vapor Barriers
All of the vapor barriers we install are made in the USA with materials that do not off-gass chemicals.
What Is A Vapor Barrier?
A vapor barrier, or vapor retarder, is construction grade polyethylene sheeting, that is most notably installed along the floor of a crawl space. It covers the exposed earth under a home, with no less than 12 inches of overlap along all of the adjoining seams. Vapor barriers provide moisture protection for a crawl space.
Do I Need A Vapor Barrier?
Yes, every crawl space should have a vapor barrier. Vapor barriers are a crucial element for any home with a crawl space. You can expect relative humidity levels to be 40-50% higher, and wood moisture levels as high as 25%, in a crawl space without a vapor barrier.
Without a vapor barrier, moisture from the soil can enter the crawl space and cause a range of problems, including mold growth, wood rot, and pest infestations. Installing a vapor barrier is a relatively simple and cost-effective way to protect your home from these issues and improve indoor air quality.

Common problems we see everyday due to insufficient vapor barriers
Condensation forming, due to high humidity, on the AC unit and duct work under the house. That condensate builds, dripping onto the vapor barrier, soaking into the wood joists where the ducts hang, and soaking into the sub-floor where the vent registers connect to duct work. Overtime, this leads to mold, musty odors, and even wood rot along the joists and sub-floor.
Standing water on top of the vapor barrier which is usually a result of a rising water table during heavy rains, and poor drainage around the foundation. A vapor barrier providing 100% ground coverage paired with an interior foundation drain can protect your home from standing water.
Musty smells in your home or crawl space are likely a result of insufficient ground coverage or an ineffective vapor barrier. Mold is often a result of high humidity, temperature, and wood moisture levels in the crawl space.
Damaged and hanging fiberglass insulation is often a result of insufficient vapor barrier coverage. The insulation can be easily damaged by moisture and humidity, and will diminish in r-value over time when exposed.
Failing North Carolina home inspections and independent home inspections is often a result of inadequate vapor barrier coverage or having no vapor barrier at all.
